Peekskill firefighters spent Wednesday night battling a three-alarm fire on 209 S. Division St. The fire displaced 14 people, nine adults and five children and four families.
According to News12, fire officials determined the fire to be accidental and that it started in the kitchen of a second floor apartment before spreading.
Firefighters also had trouble fighting the blaze since they had trouble accessing the attic, where the bulk of the fire occurred, according to News12.
After the fire, Church of the Assumption at 131 Union Ave., opened itself up as a reception center for families, according to Abigail Adams of the Red Cross.
"We ended up helping with all emergency needs like financial assistance, lodging, food and clothing," Adams said.
The Red Cross also operated a canteen for firefighters while they battled the fire, Adams said.
Children were given Stephanie Crispinelli Comfort Kits, named in honor of the Somers resident who died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
Each kit includes a stuffed animal, a couple of books, a pillow, and a fleece blanket and are given to children who have been displaced from their home or families.
