POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. --   Central Hudson crews have successfully re-routed power, restoring electric service nearly all of the 830 customers in the City of Poughkeepsie affected by the power outage that occurred after an underground fire in the downtown area Tuesday afternoon.

Power was lost again for brief period after restoration occurred at 5:40 p.m, affecting the 830 customers in the downtown area. Power from that new outage returned at 6:15 p.m. to virtually all customers.

Power remains out for approximately five businesses and associated tenants on Catherine Street between Main Street and the West-bound Arterial, John Maserjian of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. said. Crews will work through the night to repair damage caused by the outage, and power is expected to be restored by noon on Wednesday.

Central Hudson representatives are contacting affected customers individually to advise them of the repair timeframe, and suggest they seek overnight shelter. Overnight temperatures should remain above freezing, however we advise customers to allow faucets to drip to help prevent frozen pipes.

An underground fire on Catherine Street in the City of Poughkeepsie led to power outages throughout the central business district, according to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department.

"We have not as yet determined the cause, however it could be a short circuit in a power cable as a result of environmental conditions," according to Maserjian, who cited road salts or runoff, or other factors as possible causes. "We should have more information once crews have more thoroughly assessed the situation."

The Dutchess County Office Building, Dutchess County Courthouse, District Attorney Office and Board of Elections were affected by the outage. All streets remained open except for a small section of Catherine Street, police said.
