CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Cortlandt Manor resident and former youth soccer coach Michael P. Sheehan, 52, pleaded guilty to felony vehicular assault Thursday in Westchester County Court in White Plains. The charge stemmed from a Dec. 4 car crash in which police said Sheehan was driving while intoxicated and struck another car head-on, injuring the 17-year-old driver.
Sheehan served as a volunteer youth soccer coach for the Town of Cortlandt in 2011, until he left the East Hudson Youth Soccer League at mid-season in October. Both the town and the league conduct background checks.
State police received a call of a three-car accident just after 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4. Police say Sheehan fled the scene of the accident at Crompond Road and Whittier Avenue.
Police found Sheehan, and he refused to take a Breathalyzer test. Police then obtained a search warrant and compelled Sheehan to undergo a blood test for alcohol.
State police said Monday that Sheehan hit the teenager head-on before a third car hit the pair. State police did not know the extent of the boy's injuries, but said he complained of "extreme pain to right ankle and leg."
Sheehan faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison. Sentencing was set for Feb. 7, 2013.
