WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Dozens lost power in Cortlandt on Wednesday night after a transformer fire sent flames billowing more than 50 feet in the air, prompting an emergency response.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Wednesday, crews from the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Oregon Road, near the intersection of Heady Street, where first responders reported that there was a fire emanating from a high-voltage electric transformer substation.

According to the Mohegan Lake Fire Department, firefighters and troopers from the New York State Police evacuated three nearby homes, relocating the residents to a safe location in the nearby Town Hall parking lot.

Once Con Edison had the power shut off, fire crews got to work, using water hoses and foam in an attempt to quell the 2,100 gallons of fuel oil that was feeding the fire. A HAZMAT team from Montrose was also called in due to the magnitude of the incident and to hell mitigate potential oil runoff, using booms, pads and speedy dry.

No injuries were reported, though dozens of neighbors temporarily lost power. The cause of the fire was not immediately available.

Units operating on the scene included the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, Montrose Fire Department, Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, state police from the Cortlandt barracks, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Town of Cortlandt Highway and Water Department.
