Williams was a volunteer in the ambulance corps for the last 35 years. He started from youth corps and eventually became chief and deputy chief, according to the ambulance corps.

"He always helped anyone he came across and would give you the shirt off of his back if needed," the Peekskill Ambulance Corps said in a posting on its Facebook page. "Mitch will be greatly missed and there will be a hole in our heart and family for some time to come.

People who worked with Williams at the ambulance corps remembered him as a truly great person.

"Mitch was one to always give more than receive," Ralph Bennett said. "He gave more of his life to Peekskill than anyone else. Not just Peekskill but the world has lost a true hero and great person. If any of us would be half the person Mitch was, this world would be a much better place. Will miss you my friend. Thank you for all the laughs and joy you brought to my life and all you touched.".

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
