John J. Burns, 91, Of Peekskill, Navy Veteran, Retired IBM Employee

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - John J. Burns, 91, a longtime Peekskill resident, died Wednesday, March 4.

He was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Newark, N.J., to the late John and Elizabeth O'Donnell Burns.

Burns served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He then worked for IBM for 36 years, until he retired in 1987.

He was a member of Cortlandt Engine Company Fire Department in Montrose, a volunteer and life member at the Columbian Hose Company No. 1 and a life member of the Putnam Northern Westchester Fire Police Association.

He was an usher for many years at Church of the Assumption in Peekskill.

Burns also was a life member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 462, a member of the Elks Lodge No. 240 in Lewes, Del., and the American Legion Post No. 28 in Millsboro, Del.

Survivors include his wife, Helen J. Karpenski Burns; and two daughters, Patricia Burns-Beshara and Maureen (Jack) Bovich.

One sister, Regina Burns; and one son-in-law, Robert Beshara, preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Assumption, 131 Union Ave., Peekskill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Volunteer Firemen’s Home State of NY, 125 Harry Howard Ave., Hudson, NY 12534.
