Joan I. O'Leary, 86, Former Peekskill Resident

RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- Joan I. O'Leary -- a Rhinebeck resident, formerly of Peekskill -- died on Monday, April 4. She was 86.

Born in Staten Island, O'Leary attended Notre Dame College in Staten Island and later attended New Paltz College, where she received her teaching certification. She worked for over 20 years teaching first grade in the Peekskill School District.

She was an active parishioner of Good Shepherd Parish, in Rhinebeck. She was a daily mass communicant, and a member of the Women's Society and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She enjoyed reading, knitting, puzzles, and word and number games. "Her main interest, however, was her beloved children and grandchildren," information from the funeral home noted.

O'Leary is survived by her children, Cathy Sturm of East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania, Bette Sturm of Rhinebeck, Susan Merrick of Honeybrooke, Pennsylvania, Nancy of Coatsville, Pennsylvania, Daniel of Rochester, and Thomas of Bellingham, Washington; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister-in-law Rosemary Schott of Jackson, New Jersey.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, James D O'Leary; son Timothy; and parents George and Wilhemena 'Minne' (Michel) Nadler.

A wake will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, and prayers will be offered at 5:45 p.m., at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 West Market St., in Rhinebeck. A mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Church of the Good Shepherd. She will be interred next to her husband at the Assumption Cemetery, in Peekskill, at 10 a.m. on Friday.
