Dorothy Anderson, 89, Former Peekskill Resident

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Dorothy Polhill Anderson, a former longtime Peekskill resident, died Oct. 21 at the Fort Hudson Nursing Facility in Fort Edward, N.Y., following a prolonged illness. She was 89.

Born Aug. 20, 1923, in Yorktown Heights, Anderson was the daughter of Randolph and Maude Polhill. Raised in Yorktown Heights, she later moved to Peekskill, where she was a resident for more than 30 years.

She married Charles D. Anderson on March 23, 1947. A homemaker, she went to work during World War II. In 1945, Anderson was working as an elevator operator in the Empire State Building when it was struck by a B-25 bomber. She also worked briefly as a model in New York City.

Upon her husband's retirement in 1976, the couple moved to the Queensbury, N.Y., area, where Anderson became an active member of the Queensbury Seniors. She was a founder and charter president of the North Country branch of the AARP. Anderson was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her husband and two sisters, Berna Curry and Gertrude Emmons. She is survived by a daughter, Toni (Michael) Homenick, of Queensbury; and two grandchildren.

Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home in Queensbury handled arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Hudson Nursing Facility, 319 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
