Members of the Youth Group will brave the cold by sleeping out in boxes on the front steps of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Parish Center located at 110 Grand Street in Croton-on-Hudson.
They plan to be there from 4 p.m. Saturday through 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 and will be collecting food, clothing and financial donations to benefit Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill Inc. (CHOP).
CHOP's mission is to alleviate hunger and homelessness in the community by providing temporary housing for homeless adults, and by referring clients to appropriate agencies in order to help them attain independent living.
It currently operates the Jan Peek House Shelter for the Homeless, Sunny Donut Free Breakfast Program and Fred’s Pantry at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
"In an effort to be in solidarity with our homeless brothers and sisters the kids have decided to fast throughout much of the 19 hours," said God Squad Youth Minister Carl Barnes in a release.
The youth group has been raising money for the homeless for nine years. To date, God Squad has raised more than $8,000 for CHOP.
“I just can’t believe that these kids are willing to do this for us,” CHOP’s Board Chairman, Steve Feldman, said in a statement. “We want to do anything that we can do to support their effort.”
