Wintry Mix Results In Dangerous Travel, Accidents, Closures In Westchester

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- With wintry precipitation turning to all rain -- some heavy at times -- by early afternoon Sunday, a flood advisory was issued by the National Weather Service until 2:45 p.m. and a flood warning that expired at 6:15 p.m.

Earlier Sunday, wintry precipitation resulted in slick driving conditions, accidents and closures on area roadways.

The Freezing Rain Advisory issued by the National Weather Service was extended until 1 p.m. Sunday. It was originally in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday.

The New York State Thruway closed southbound at 9:11 a.m. from Newburgh to the New Jersey border due to icing.

The Taconic State Parkway closed in both directions at 10:20 a.m. between I-84 and Inspiration Road in Mohegan Lake.

Icy conditions resulted in the closure of the Sprain Brook Parkway in both directions at the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) at 8:20 a.m. 

Just prior to that, a multi-vehicle accident was reported on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Elmsford. An accident was also reported on I-287 between Exit 4 (Route 100A) and Exit 3 (Sprain Brook Parkway).?

A stretch of southbound I-95 at Playland Parkway in Rye closed at 7:20 a.m. because of an accident.

Further south, an accident blocked the right lane of I-95 between Chatsworth Avenue (Exit 17) in Larchmont and North Avenue/Cedar Street (Exit 16) in New Rochelle. The accident was reported at 7:30 a.m.

The Saw Mill River Parkway closed at Lockwood Avenue in Yonkers at 8:15 a.m. and northbound at Route 133 in Mount Kisco at 9:32 a.m.

Three lanes of the southbound Sprain Brook Parkway were blocked following an accident at Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers reported at 7:50 a.m.

A serious accident was reported on the Bear Mountain State Parkway at Highland Avenue in Peekskill at 8:55 a.m.

A multi-vehicle accident was reported on the Taconic State Parkway in Briarcliff Manor at 8 a.m.

Another multi-vehicle accident occurred on the southbound Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale at 8 a.m.

Bee-Line bus service was delayed as result of the conditions until 1 p.m.

A wintry mix could return after midnight, with rain likely, possibly mixing with snow after 2 a.m., before gradually ending.

The outlook for Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is partly sunny with a high between 36 and 38 degrees.
