The loan request passed 176-159 on Tuesday, Dec.9. Voters also approved a proposition to raise the retirement age from 55 to 60.
The Locksley Road fire station suffers from a leaky roof and Jackie Sullivan, a fire department secretary, said renovating the station will allow firefighters to stay there when they have to be on standby for emergencies like with Hurricane Sandy.
"The firehouse needs some maintenance," Sullivan said. "The taxpayers shouldn't be worried about million dollar fire trucks getting ruined because we were not able to fix the buildings."
Sullivan said he was very happy the voters approved the loan and said residents in Yorktown get a lot of coverage for their tax dollars.
"It costs $1.3 million to run the department with 50 volunteer firefighters, two firehouses and 11 pieces of apparatus," Sullivan said.
The renovation of the firehouse is expected to begin sometime next year. Sullivan said firefighters are the front line of the town.
"We are all volunteers," Sullivan said. "At 3 a.m., we're the guys who come out in the freezing cold and fight fires and assist with car accidents. It's nice the taxpayers decided to help us. It means a lot to us."
