Daniel Flanigan, a disabled veteran from Pawling, was selected by Purple Heart Homes, a nonprofit that provides housing solutions for disabled veterans. Officials recently held a ceremony for Flanigan at the Patterson Fire Department to build support for the renovation.

“It is a sad reality that this hero who has suffered with his war wounds, both visible and internal, for decades is now on the verge of homelessness," Ball said in a release. "As a nation we must do better, and while we can't change the world, we can change the world for this hero, and we will."

An initiative began in Mahopac in September 2013 after the community gathered to build or renovate a home for a service-connected disabled veteran in Ball’s district, according to a release.

Renovation on Flanigan's home will begin in June. Work on the project is expected to take at least four months. An official Welcome Home Ceremony will be held for Flanigan when the renovations have been completed.

“This house I live in was left to me by my parents who died in 1999," Flanigan said. It needs a lot of repairs, which I can’t afford. I’m struggling to make ends meet and my physical health is deteriorating with a severe spinal condition and arthritis in my left hip. The VA replaced my right hip three years ago,” said Dan Flanigan. “My neighbor was nice enough to make Purple Heart Homes aware of me, and I hope they can help. I thank God for sparing my life in Vietnam and am proud to have served my country to this day.”

Those who would like to join the Purple Heart Homes Task Force can contact Ball’s office at kgobins@nysenate.gov or 845-279-3773.
