WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – United Way is looking for volunteers to help take calls from those devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
The charitable non-profit organization opened a 2-1-1 telephone line the day before Sandy struck the tri-state area and volunteers have answered more than 10,000 calls since.
“Honestly, we could not have done it without the help of volunteers who are working side-by-side with our trained staff,” said Shannon Cobb, senior vice president of marketing and communications for United Way in Westchester and Putnam counties. “But we need more help.”
The volunteers would answer the 2-1-1 storm-related calls and “input the calls into the system” so that United Way can “give reports to elected officials about the changing needs in the community.”
Shifts run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. To sign up, email Brenda@volunteer-center.org or call her cell at 917-797-9468.
