Cortlandt Man Charged After Being In Possession Of Drugs, Counterfeit Bills

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Akintunde Akinleye, a Cortlandt Manor man, and Alberto Aviles, a Putnam Valley man, have been arrested and charged after a traffic stop in which police learned there was a quantity of cocaine, marijuana, digital scale and counterfeit $100 bills in their vehicle, and both were subject of active arrest warrants on Sunday, March 15, according to Putnam County's Sheriff's Department.

Police said on Sunday, March 15, at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies assigned to the Narcotic Enforcement Unit (NEU) observed a motorist commit several traffic violations on Route 6.

Police said during an ensuing traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle was uncooperative and refused to comply with the deputies’ instructions.

An investigation at the scene revealed that there was a quantity of cocaine, marijuana and a digital scale in the vehicle and that both the driver and a passenger were the subject of active arrest warrants, according to police. Additionally, Akinleye was in possession of three counterfeit $100 bills, and was determined to have been driving while he held a suspended license, according to police. 

Police said the deputies arrested Akinleye charged him with the following criminal offenses: criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree and with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the first degree, felonies; resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree, misdemeanors and several traffic violations.

It was determined that Akinleye was the subject of several arrest warrants issued by the City of Yonkers Justice Court on narcotics, obstruction and trespass charges.

The deputies also arrested Aviles and charged him with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, a felony; criminally using drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor; and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. It was determined that Aviles was wanted for traffic offenses in Maricopa County, Ariz.

The two defendants were arraigned before Town of Putnam Valley Justice Louis DiCarlo. Akinleye was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility without bail and Aviles was committed to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,500 cash bail pending future court appearances.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
