Mayor Mary Foster told residents at the July 16 Common Council meeting that council members were not aware of the planning board’s approval of the new clinic at 3 Corporate Drive.
The clinic, to be run by the Elmsford-based Renaissance Project Inc., is intended to replace one currently operating at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center.
The approval was voided after it was determined that the city did not notify all those within the immediate area of the planned clinic in both Peekskill and neighboring Cortlandt. The process was then started again and led to many heated comments from area residents at public hearings and online in petitions.
Despite strong opposition from the community, the planning board once again approved the project at its October meeting, with members arguing that there was no legal way to turn the project down. Foster and the Common Council have since hired a law firm to fight the project, and planning commission Chair Dwight Douglas later resigned.
