BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The two teenagers who were charged with felony vandalism earlier this month in connection with the destruction of the sidewalk on North State Road are set for court appearances in May.
Briarcliff Manor Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said the village will continue to seek full restitution against the two un-named teens. An officer with the Briarcliff Manor Police Department confirmed previously a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were arrested under felony vandalism charges. Zegarelli said the 16-year-old boy soon will turn 17 and has a hearing set for sometime in May in Briarcliff Manor Justice Court. Zegarelli confirmed the 15-year-old also would have a hearing in May in Westchester Family Court.
Village officials originally estimated the damage to the sidewalk would cost roughly $20,000, but Zegarelli said recently the actual cost of construction came out to be around $16,000.
We sincerely tried to salvage some of the damaged area and we were able to get it done for about $16,000, Zegarelli said. Were going for full restitution and additionally community service.
Zegarelli also responded to recent criticism the village was seeking a punishment that didnt fit the crime.
People said that and they said you know, kids will be kids. But this goes beyond kids being kids, Zegarelli said. I think there is a lesson to be learned here not only on the cost of this but also that there are effects to peoples actions.
Zegarelli expanded on the cost of recent theft and destruction in his April 13 village manager's report.
Theft and/or destruction of park signage such as what occurred at Neighborhood Park was costly: $850.00 to replace, Zegarelli wrote. To replace a stolen or damaged local street sign is $150.00, each. Reports of the battering of residential mail boxes again peaked last week. Put no other way this is resident-to-resident destruction of private property. Please report these occurrences to our Police Department (941-2130). These actions have do have consequences: the VBM will pursue prosecution and seek full restitution.
Road crews recently finished the sidewalk construction on North State Road and village officials plan to add a guardrail and lights in the coming months.
