The decision, which came after some public remarks at the July 10 meeting, followed a closure of a related public hearing regarding a proposed change to the town’s 1994 comprehensive master plan. The board then voted to schedule second public hearings for both items, which will be held Thursday, Sept. 11.

Hidden Meadow, a proposal from Kearney Realty & Development Group, involves developing a 16.7-acre site on Route 6, according to town records. The proposal, according to an overview memo, calls for the construction of 53 housing units in town house structures, with 16 of them being affordable housing units. The proposed development would have 45 town house lots, with some buildings having more than one housing unit, according to the memo.

The site currently has residential zoning called R-80, and the rezoning proposal involves the use of a floating zone, called MFR-BP, to allow for multifamily housing, according to the memo.

Françoise Bennett, co-president of the Somers League of Women Voters, endorsed the rezoning and master plan update, stating concern for the need for affordable housing. She also gave reasons in favor of the site, including shopping and a nearby bus stop.

Another woman who spoke declared her opposition to the changes and expressed concern regarding the zoning and the master plan.

“Please study this carefully,” she said.
