WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D - New York) hailed the engineer of the Metro-North train that collided with an SUV in Valhalla and killed six people earlier this month as a hero, according to Capital New York.

A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board said the commuter train was operating within the speed limits and the engineer applied the emergency brakes 300 feet before the collision. Schumer said despite the loss of life, the quick reactions of the engineer spared many more losses, Capital New York reported.

With the emergency brakes applied, the train slowed from 58 mph to 49 mph. The resulting collision killed Elmsford resident Ellen Brody, who was stuck on the tracks in her SUV as well as five passengers on the train, Captial New York said.
