Santa Claus Rides Through the Streets

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – It was more than just a tree lighting in town as Santa Claus rolled through the streets by VFW Park while sitting atop a red convertible as local children cheered his name out loud.

“It’s fun to see some believers,” said Angela Reeve as kids ran down the street chasing after Santa Claus.

Warburton Ave. was filled with children and their families as crowds formed at the park in anticipation of the annual lighting.  To help entertain the masses until the switch was flipped, locals sang along to live holiday songs being played on the piano.

“We are so excited,” said superintendent of recreation Ray Gomes.  “It’s one of the most fun events we do all year and we’re happily we can do a family orientated event outside.”

Local businesses got involved too with one even being open and outfitted as a life size gingerbread house that people could walk through.  Candy was taped to the walls for kids to enjoy and Mrs. Claus was also in the streets handing out lollipops.

As the tree was officially lit at 6:30 p.m. the crowd cheered and waved their glow in the dark necklaces in the air in celebration.  It was no small task though as lights of various sizes and colors line the streets.

“We were here a week and a half before setting up the lights throughout the village and on the trees,” Gomes said. A jazz band played live music inside Hastings Velo across the street from the community center throughout the night and Santa settled in to hear what everyone wanted for the holidays.

“It’s a group presentation,” Gomes said.  “It’s a real feel good event and a great way to start the holidays.”
