Riverkeeper Asks Residents To Tell NRC To Take Charge Of Nuclear Waste

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- Riverkeeper is asking residents to help tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission "to take responsibility for nuclear waste dumps in our communities."

Riverkeeper is asking residents to help send letters to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to submit letters to the NRC following the release of the NRC's environmental impact statement on its "Waste Confidence Rule."

Representatives with Riverkeeper said the NRC has licensed nuclear reactors "without having a plan for how to safely store and dispose of the highly radioactive spent fuel they produce," according to a release. With that idea in mind, Riverkeeper is asking representatives to submit letters to the NRC following the release of the NRC's environmental impact statement on its "Waste Confidence Rule."

"The NRC has issued a highly flawed draft environmental impact statement that fails to come up with a credible plan to protect communities across the U.S. from the long-term risks associated with nuclear waste, and fails to consider the specific risks associated with storing nuclear waste at Indian Point," representatives with Riverkeeper said in a release. "Tell the NRC to take responsibility for the incredible risks posed by the de facto nuclear waste dumps in our communities: conduct the complete environmental review mandated by the court, and realistically consider the risks associated with centuries of nuclear waste storage."

Residents are asked to submit letters and comments by Dec. 20 at the Riverkeeper website.
