The company is celebrating its 30-year anniversary at one of its newest locations, 1877 E. Main St. in the Beaches Shopping Center in Peekskill. Rita's, which specializes in Italian ices and custard, opened in the city last summer. As part of the celebration, Rita's is holding a contest where the winner will receive free Italian ices for 30 years and also introducing new flavors.

"We visited a Rita's where we lived and we liked the product," Irene DeAngelis, who runs Rita's with her husband, Joe, said. "It seemed like a fun business with a very solid business plan."

DeAngelis, who lives upstate, said she has enjoyed being a part of the Peekskill community. The Peekskill location was voted as Rita's rookie of the year franchise.

"We have been extremely welcomed," DeAngelis said. "We drove around Westchester and this seemed like the right place to open a business. People are great, they are always engaging us in conversation."

Rita's has been involved in Peekskill from working with the youth bureau, sponsoring sports teams and being involved in Peekskill parades. Rita's also raises money for Alex's Lemonade Stand, which helps fight childhood cancer.

The custard and ice at Rita's is made daily and the ice has a 36-hour shelf life.

"I let myself have one treat a day," DeAngelis said. "I have a cup of custard with hot fudge."

Rita's has more than 65 flavors, including Georgia peach, key lime,  peanut butter and jelly and blue raspberry.

Rita's also offers a line of custard that's sugar free and has less fat, for those wanting to eat better and still enjoy custard.

"It's still really good," DeAngelis said.

The DeAngelis's have a Rita's in Bethel and are planning to open a location in Danbury.
