The supermoon occurs when the Earth's satellite reaches the point in its orbit when it is closest to the planet. The moon appears 14 percent larger during this time. The supermoon will be coupled with a lunar eclipse, when the moon passes behind the Earth's shadow. Red light is able to pass through the Earth's atmosphere creating what is often referred to as a blood moon, accuweather.com said.
The supermoon and blood moon will coincide at approximately 9:07 p.m. on Sunday after the moon starts darkening shortly after 8 p.m.
The moon will be completely shaded for approximately one hour starting at 10 p.m. with the peak of the eclipse at approximately 10:45 a.m.
The two events won't happen together again for another 18 years.
