Peekskill Woman Represents Westchester In Puerto Rico Recovery Efforts

A Westchester resident will represent the Hudson Valley in Puerto Rico as the nation continues recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria left much of the country without electricity.

Peekskill resident Shakira Wilson will serve as an Incident Commander for Con Edison and Orange & Rockland field operations in Puerto Rico, overseeing more than 100 overhead power line workers, technical specialists and support personnel on the island.

According to Con Edison officials, Wilson is a general manager of Con Edison’s Bronx and Westchester Electric Operations, managing more than 200 employees in the Hudson Valley. She has been with the company for nearly two decades.

In October, President Donald Trump signed a relief bill to help rebuild areas of the country damaged by natural disasters this fall, including up to $4.9 billion in loans to help Puerto Rico’s cash-strapped central government.

Since the hurricane struck more than two months ago, just two-thirds of the power on the island has been restored, and while residents have regained access to water, a boil advisory remains. Just 73 percent of cell sites are operational and there are still nearly 1,000 survivors holed up in shelters throughout Puerto Rico.
