Peekskill Mayor Catalina Commits To End Veterans' Homelessness

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina has joined the national Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. The program is aimed at combining federal, state, and community resources to aid homeless veterans in finding housing and services needed to help them stay.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is part of the effort to end homelessness among veterans.

Catalina is just one of 474 mayors nationwide committed to the initiative,launched in June 2014, by first lady Michelle Obama, uniting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness and the National League of Cities.

The joint effort involves working with local agencies so that veterans receive financial assistance and job training, along with housing and other social services.

“HUD welcomes and applauds Mayor Catalina’s commitment to ending veteran homelessness this year,” Holly Leicht, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey, said in a statement.

“The brave men and women of the military, who have given so much to protect our lives and liberty, deserve to have a place they can call their own. Through the Mayors Challenge, all levels of government are joining forces to make sure that they do.”
