McKenzie's appointment came Monday night and she is set to fill Bennett's seat after he resigned Sept. 3, according to a press release from the city. Councilwoman McKenzie's term is set to expire at midnight on Nov. 5 "when a successor selected by voters in a special election will take office and serve the remainder of Mr. Bennett’s term, through December 31, 2015, in accordance with the city charter," according to the release.
"I'm honored to be appointed to serve the people of this great city and I look forward to working hard for all of Peekskill," said Councilwoman McKenzie, a Democrat, in the release.
McKenzie is the owner of Kathleen’s Tea Room in downtown Peekskill. She graduated from Peekskill City Schools and received a B.S. in Management from the State University of New York at Binghamton and spent 27 years in the insurance industry with corporations including Hanover Insurance, GMAC and Allstate, according to the release. Bennett resigned after 10 years of service to the city, due to health reasons, city officials said in the release.
