OSSINING, N.Y. Students in Anne M. Dorner Middle School cooked a Thanksgiving meal this week for residents of the Jan Peek Shelter for the homeless in Peekskill.
The sixth, seventh and eighth graders in Barbara Anderson-Greenfield's class used math skills to help prepare the meal, which included roast turkey, candied yams, pumpkin pie, corn muffins, cranberry relish, mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy. They also learned about early American history and Thanksgiving traditions and talked about social justice.
"We are quadrupling the recipes so that tied in nicely with the study of measurements that they are doing in science right now," Anderson-Greenfield said. "We read from diaries and letters and other primary documents to learn about Thanksgiving traditions."
Student Samantha Ferguson, who prepared candied yams by stirring together sweet potatoes, butter and brown sugar, said she liked preparing a meal for 16 people.
"It's exciting to know that we are helping people and making them feel good," she said.
Classmate Brandon Duran said he enjoyed the team-building aspect of the project.
"I consider all of you family because you helped me clean up," he said.
