OSSINING, N.Y. -- For 23 years, Ossining's outdoor farmer's market has become an institution in the village.
Ossining's Winter Down to Earth Farmers Market opened its winter season on Saturday, Jan. 4. The market, located at the corner of Spring and Main Streets, features local produce, meats, fish, breads, cheeses, pickles, baked goods. The market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This year's marketing slogan for the event is "Try It!" to encourage people who may have never visited the farmers market before to come down or to encourage people to try something different when they purchase food.
"This year's marketing theme is an invitation to everybody to try all that the farmers market has to offer," Frankie Rowland, director of marketing and communications for Down to Earth Markets said. "For example, our farmers grow produce varieties available only at the markets and we encourage people to experiment with them."
One of the featured vendors is Hudson River Apiaries from Verplanck, which serves eggs, dairy and honey.
Though the farmer's market has been in Ossining since 1991, it only recently started becoming a year-round event.
"It's great to have a longstanding community event in the middle of downtown," Nicole Reed, manager of communications and special projects for Down to Earth Markets said. "It unifies the community, we have our own public square."
Reed said people soon realize that on days in January, the weather makes for a nice outing and the market allows people a great chance to catch up while supporting local businesses.
"If you buy locally, it stays within the local economy," Reed said. "These farmers are all from this area. They drive here and drive back and stay in their own bed."
Reed said they have received lots of positive feedback since deciding to open year-round.
"Usually people attend and say what winter?" Reed said.
