The bear was spotted just before dawn near Holy Trinity Church, by Raymond Avenue and Main Street, according to Town of Poughkeepsie police.

No one was reported hurt as a result of the encounter, police said.

There have been scattered bear sightings throughout the summer in Dutchess, Putnam and northern Westchester counties as well as Connecticut, according to area police and state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

DEC officials advise the public not to approach bears. Homeowners are encouraged to keep garbage cans closed or in sheds and garages, regularly clean barbecue grills and not leave open food sources -- including bird feeders -- in their yards.
