The Hyde Park Police Department received multiple calls reporting an auto accident which had just occurred on Route 9 (Albany Post Road) between Scenic Drive and Ledges Drive, said Lt. Robert Benson.

When officers arrived they found the car, which had been traveling southbound on Route 9, had crossed into the oncoming lane, left the roadway, struck a rock wall and finally struck a tree, before bursting into flames. The male driver, who was the sole occupant, was killed, Benson said.

The Hyde Park and Fairview Fire Departments initially responded and extinguished the fire and the Roosevelt Fire Department responded later to assist with the recovery of the driver, he added.

Hyde Park Police were assisted in the investigation by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and their CRASH team for accident reconstruction as well as the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Preliminary identification of the victim was made through the crash investigation, however identity of the victim is being withheld at this time pending a final determination by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Benson said.
