Man Charged In Head-On Collision in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – After a lengthy hospital stay, a New York City man was arraigned in Cortlandt Town Justice Court Friday, after being involved in a serious head-on collision on the Bear Mountain State Parkway on Sept. 11, 2011.

James E. Anderson, 43, of New York City, formerly of Yorktown Heights, was arraigned in connection with the head-on crash that landed three people in the hospital in critical condition.

Anderson was charged with two felony counts of vehicular assault, one count misdemeanor DWI, one misdemeanor count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and one traffic infraction, Crossing Hazardous Markings.

New York State Police say that at about 1 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2011, Anderson was driving eastbound on the Bear Mountain State Parkway in his 2006 Honda Pilot when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a 2008 Audi driving westbound. The Audi was driven by a 17-year-old Carmel resident, with a 16-year-old passenger from Shrub Oak.

Both drivers were hospitalized in critical condition for lengthy periods of time; the 16-year-old Shrub Oak resident was also injured and hospitalized.

Police say Anderson had a .16 percent blood alcohol content according to lab tests, twice the legal limit, and that he did not have a driver’s license at the time of the accident.

Arraignment was held until Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, because of health issues stemming from the crash, according to Investigator Sean Morgan of the New York State Police.
