Charles D'Amico of Poughkeepsie pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter in the strangulation death of 49-year-old Jill Meltzer, according to Kristine Whelan, chief of the Special Victims Bureau at the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office.

D'Amico will be sentenced to 23 years in state prison and five years post-release supervision, Whelan said.

Whelan said the office agreed to the plea after consulting with Meltzer's family, and the fact that D'Amico waived the right to appeal.

Meltzer was found after police received a call about 4:50 p.m., August 17, for a welfare check at the Hudson Harbour Apartments on South Road, police said.

When officers arrived they found D'Amico inside the apartment, as well Meltzer's body.

Police said D'Amico was an acquaintance of the victim.

D'Amico was originally charged with second-degree murder.  He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4.
