WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rep. Nita Lowey has announced a grant for more than $300,000 federal aid to help reimburse the costs to the Westchester County's Bee-Line bus system.

Lowey, a Democrat who represents the 17th Congressional District, has announced a $317,000 federal grant will reimburse the county for the costs to bus system that were incurred during its response to last fall's powerful storm.

Westchester County and Bee-Line’s operators, Liberty Lines, helped prepare for the storm, monitor conditions and aid with recovery, Lowey said.  This included surveying roads for closures and determining when it was safe to resume operations of lines; monitoring delays and detours; protecting facilities and vehicles; and providing staff at the county’s Emergency Operations Center.

“Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of Westchester County and required transit officials to put significant resources into preparation, emergency response and clean up,” said Lowey in a statement released Tuesday. “As Westchester County’s families and businesses continue to recover from Sandy, the announcement of this critical federal aid for the county is welcome news and will help ease the financial burden of the county’s Sandy response.”

The funds being awarded to the county come from the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at helping states affected by Sandy that was passed by Congress in January.

Lowey helped lead the bipartisan effort to pass the full assistance package.
