It Was An Eventful 2013 In Westchester County

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Westchester's 330th year was one of big decisions and milestones. 2013 came jam-packed with captivating stories from across the county. Here are some of the biggest stories from this year:

2013 marked the 330th anniversary of the founding of Westchester County, which celebrated its birthday in November.

Incumbent Rob Astorino beat challenger Noam Bramson in the race for county executive 55 percent to 45 percent in November. 

"The people of Westchester have spoken today and I like what they said," Astorino told his supporters at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains as he began his victory speech.

Astorino has also intimated he may be challenging Andrew Cuomo for New York State Governor in 2014. 

Installation of the first test piles marked the beginning of construction for the new Tappan Zee Bridge in July.

In March, New Rochelle's Khalil Edney scored an improbable buzzer-beater against Mount Vernon. The feat was caught on a video that quickly went viral. The game-winning shot was the lead story on the 8 p.m. ESPN SportsCenter Sunday. He narrowly lost the "Best Play Award," at the Espy's.

The county reached a deal with Sustainable Playland Inc. for the nonprofit to manage and revamp Rye Playland in April. 

Local radio personality Caroline Corley died suddenly in November. She was a longtime host of 107.1 FM "The Peak's" morning drive show from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In October, Hastings-on-Hudson resident Michael LoPriore reached one million followers on the popular app Vine. He has been offered to do a six-second Samsung commercial for $4,000, and potentially begin work on his own television show.
