PEEKSKILL, N.Y. The Peekskill sanitation worker who suffered a head injury Friday after falling off a garbage truck is still in critical condition, city officials announced Monday.
Peekskill Police Spokesperson Lt. Eric Johansen told common council members Monday night at the committee of the whole meeting that the unnamed employee was still in the hospital.
"Keep him in your thoughts and prayers, he has a very significant injury," Johansen said.
Both on duty and off duty paramedics responded to the accident, which happened at about 10:10 a.m. at the 900 block of Main Street and the 10 block of North Division Street. Both roads were closed while the accident was investigated but was reopened by 4 p.m.
Council members asked Johansen for a more detailed briefing on the man's condition when they went to executive session later that night. Executive sessions are not open to the press.
"He's a young guy so we really do hope things turn for the better," said Mayor Mary Foster of the victim.
Both the mayor and Acting City Manager Brian Havranek credited the city's emergency responders for their fast response in not just the accident but also Saturday's fire on Main Street.
"The lieutenant said we had great turnout of both active on duty and off-duty employees who showed up in gear," Havranek said.
