Hurricane Sandy Could Affect Tappan Zee Bridge

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Motorists should expect speed restrictions and possible closures on bridges and tunnels in the New York metropolitan area because of Hurricane Sandy.

Officials say sustained winds of 50 mph could start to cause bridge closures during Hurricane Sandy.

“As we begin to feel the effects of Hurricane Sandy it is important that New Yorkers limit their travel as much as possible,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “If you need to cross one of our bridges or tunnels, get the latest updates from www.511ny.org before heading out and be prepared for speed restrictions and possible closures based on storm conditions.”

Cuomo's office said sustained winds of 30 mph or more will cause speed restrictions on bridges including the Tappan Zee Bridge. Certain cars, such as tractor-trailers and motorcycles, will be banned from bridges if winds reach 50 mph or higher. Bridges will close if winds reach 60 mph or more.

Bridge and tunnel closings will be conducted on a case-by-case basis and will reopen as the weather improves, officials said.
