GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Christine Ji Woo Kang, the 16-year-old who ran away from home on Jan. 2, has been found safe in a midtown-Manhattan church, according to an Edgemont group searching for her.

Edgemont Community Cares posted the good news on its web site on Sunday night. Greenburgh Police Chief Chris McNerney confirmed the news about 8:40 p.m.

In a press statement, McNerney wrote: "Christine is safe and in the custody of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department. Greenburgh Detectives are on their way to pick up Christine at this time."

The junior from Edgemont High School had been staying at St. Agnes Church at 143 East 43rd St. in Manhattan. Church officials recognized her and notified law enforcement after Edgemont residents Saturday posted flyers around Grand Central Station.

Aubrey Graf-Daniels, who was heading up Edgemont Cares, was at Greenburgh police headquarters Sunday night and announced the news about 7:45 p.m.

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner called it "a very happy ending to a stressful week."

Feiner said that he, McNerney, Graf-Daniels and Christine's parents had a meeting to discuss strategies to enhance the chances of finding Christine.

"Toward the end of our meeting we received a phone call from one of the Greenburgh police detectives assigned to the case (saying) 'Christine is safe.' It's a moment one never forgets," Feiner said. "The parents, Min Jong Kang and Hyeeun Rose Kwon, were overjoyed. Lots of hugging and tears of joy."

On Jan. 2, after a disagreement with a parent, Christine ran away from home and took a train from Scarsdale to Grand Central Terminal. She was last seen walking south about 11 p.m. on Lexington Avenue just below 42nd Street.
