The event will provide information and access to service providers and professionals regarding the dangers of prescription pain medication abuse and addiction and mental health issues that are contributing to the current epidemic of opioid abuse locally.

There will be 10 local and regional professional organizations and service providers in attendance who will be available to interact directly with attendees. They will be ready to answer questions and help guide anyone that may be experiencing problems related to substance use or mental health.

In addition, Dr. Frederick R. Hesse, medical director at Arms Acres, will talk about how dangerous opiates are, who is at risk, what to do if you think you are addicted and what to do if a doctor prescribes opiates to your child. Susan and Steven Salomone and Carol Christiansen will explain what their organization, Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, has been doing locally to help bring awareness of the opiate epidemic and explain the services available.

“Many people ask who we are and what we do, and how someone can help our organization. To fill that need, we are hosting this meet and greet to help the community know where resources are for counseling, prevention and treatment” said Susan Salomone, co-founder and president of Drug Crisis in Our Backyard.

Drug Crisis in Our Backyard is a nonprofit community action organization founded in 2012 by the Salomone and Christiansen families who each lost a child to a heroin overdose.
