Con Ed Continues To Investigate Harlem Explosion

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Con Edison crews are continuing to investigate the explosion in Harlem Wednesday morning that killed two people and injured at least 18 more.

About 75 Con Ed personnel are on site, working closely with fire officials and emergency services to make sure the area is safe and determine the exact cause of the explosion, according to Con Ed. All electric and gas service has been shut down between East 116th and East 117th Streets on the west side of Park Avenue.

Con Ed crews were responding to a report of a gas odor at 1652 Park Ave. right before the explosion occurred. The company received a call at 9:13 a.m. from a resident who reported smelling gas inside an apartment, but indicated the odor may have been coming from outside the building, according to Con Edison. The crews were dispatched at 9:15 a.m. and were en route when the explosion occurred.

"We will conduct a thorough investigation in conjunction with all appropriate agencies to determine the cause of this tragedy," Con Ed said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, and friends of the victims, to all who have been involved, and to all who are affected."
