The coalition includes Better Future Project and West Roxbury Saves Energy (WRSE), both based in Massachusetts; Capitalism v. the Climate, from Connecticut; national group Food & Water Watch; Community Watersheds Clean Water Coalition; Fossil Free Rhode Island; Keep Yorktown Safe; the City of Peekskill; Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group; and Stop the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion (SAPE), based in New York.
The coalition was spurred into action when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the project on March 3, filing a motion through Washington attorney Carolyn Elefant on April 2. If the motion is rejected, then the group plans further action.
“Local, state and federal elected officials and citizens along the entire AIM route have repeatedly cited the flawed FERC review. FERC’s approval is not supported by substantial evidence. The Certificate of Approval of the AIM Project should be withdrawn,” SAPE co-founder Suzannah Glidden said.
The coalition cites various health and safety issues that have been ignored in the project's history.
For example, the pipeline expansion is supposed to go past the the Indian Point nuclear facility, which is in a seismic zone in Buchanan, N.Y., and next to an active quarry in West Roxbury, Mass.
The AIM project is part of a larger plan over three projects to ship natural gas from the Marcellus Shale to New England, Canada and further export facilities.
