PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Community Housing Innovations, Inc. (CHI) is renovating two 113-year-old adjacent buildings in Peekskill’s Waterfront District thanks to a $150,000 New York State economic development grant.

CHI will use the funds, plus $50,000 in matching funds from the agency, to renovate 400 – 404 South St., which includes 11 affordable rental apartments and one street-level commercial space.

“Our goal is restore the exterior to original early-20th century splendor and preserve much-needed affordable housing in a waterfront neighborhood that is critical to Peekskill’s revitalization,” Alexander Roberts, executive director of CHI, said in a release.

The restoration project includes masonry improvements on the exterior, which will then be repainted in colors reflective of the buildings’ historic past.

Awnings will also be replaced, and a porch on one side will be rebuilt and painted. Local architect Chris Borchardt is working with CHI on the plans.

Peekskill’s Waterfront District is considered an important neighborhood in the town’s overall economic development plan because it serves as a public access point to the Hudson River and hosts a Metro-North Railroad station.

Community Housing Innovations, Inc., a White Plains-based nonprofit organization, provides housing and human services to low- and moderate-income families and individuals.
