Indian Point Security Drills Include Artificial Gunfire

BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- Residents should not be alarmed if they hear gunfire coming from the Indian Point Energy Center at various times on Tuesday, June 21 and on Thursday, June 30, the gunshots are part of a training exercise by plant security personnel.

The training drills involve simulated attack scenarios that are intended to be as realistic as possible.

Plant officials said residents may hear the sound of artificial gunfire from simulated weaponry used during the exercises.

"Indian Point’s security personnel conduct regularly scheduled exercises throughout the year as part of their continual, rigorous training. Because these exercises are intended to be as realistic as possible, security personnel use specialized equipment which mimics the sound of gunfire. We want to let the public know that this is just an exercise and there is no cause for concern," said Patricia Kakridas, Nuclear Communications, Entergy Corporation.

During the drills, security officers will be using Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Systems, or MILES, gear. These systems involve special laser weaponry which duplicates the effects, including sound, of live ammunition.

MILES gear is also used for military and counter-terrorism training across the country.
