Anti-Bullying Survey Issued To Schools By State

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – The state Attorney General's Office and the State Education Department issued a statewide survey to all New York school districts on Tuesday in an effort to compile information about the actions schools have taken to implement the Dignity for all Students Act.

The Dignity Act is New York’s first statewide anti-bullying legislation and stands against discrimination and harassment in public elementary and secondary schools. Survey results will be used to study the implementation of the act in schools to make sure students have a safe school environment.

“Students cannot learn when they live in fear of being harassed and bullied at school,” Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said. “This survey will explore the steps New York school districts are taking to put the Dignity Act into effect. I am pleased to partner with our state’s Department of Education in this effort to make sure that all of our students have the safe and welcoming learning environments they deserve.”

The Act became law in 2010, and requires that a school district's code of conduct includes prohibitions on harassment, bullying and discrimination; that the information is distributed to students and parents; and that employees are properly trained regarding bullying and harassment.

“We’ve all seen the hurt and suffering bullying can cause to our students. There’s no place anywhere for that kind of behavior, but it’s even more disturbing in our schools. Schools must be a refuge, a safe place for children to learn without fear. We’ll continue to work with Attorney General Schneiderman to protect all of our students,” said New York State Commissioner of Education John B. King, Jr.

Districts must provide the information within six weeks.
