PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - The organizers of this year's city Memorial Day service are looking for family members of those listed on the war memorial to take part in Monday's Memorial Day event.
John Donohue, commander of Peekskill's American Legion Post 274, is asking those related to the service members listed on the city's war memorial to ring the Freedom Bell, which will be brought to the service by the Lincoln Society. The bell will be rung during the reading of the names inscribed on the monument.
"We have the Freedom Bell coming, along with people who will be dressed in Civil War garb," Donohue said. "We will have relatives of those who are inscribed on the momument assembled to the left of where the speakers are, and when the names are read, they will ring the bell." He added: "The bell rings loud and clear; it's a beautiful sound."
Donohue is asking those who wish to participate to contact him at (917) 834-8588 or by fax at (914) 736-3628, as soon as possible.
This year's event will be held Monday, May 28 at Monument Park at 10 a.m.
This year's ceremony will once again feature the Peekskill High School Band, as well as city musicians Tim Murphy and Joe Brady Jr. Local elected officials will also be in attendance.
