PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Shirley Swartz, a longtime Peekskill resident, died Sunday, April 29, at her home. She was 93.
Born May 4, 1918, she was the daughter of Clyde and Irene Riker Evans. She graduated from Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown and attended business school in New York City.
She married Henry Forrest Swartz on Feb. 8, 1941, at First Reform Church of North Tarrytown. During World War II, Swartz worked as a secretary in the engineering department at Eastern Aircraft, while her husband served in the U.S. Army. She joined E.W. Axe & Co. in Tarrytown in 1946 as an assistant to the vice president and treasurer.
In 1967, Swartz became the assistant treasurer and was subsequently promoted to treasurer in 1977. She was elected to the board of directors in 1979 and retired in 1983. She enjoyed gardening and shopping.
Swartz is survived by a cousin, William Riker, and his wife, Debra, whom she often referred to as her children. Forrest, her husband of 59 years, died in 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at E.O. Curry Funeral Home in Peekskill. Friends may call on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor.
