Peekskill Fitness Guru Offers Holistic Approach to Wellness

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- After walking up the stairs to Energy Movement Center, you are welcomed by butterfly chairs, framed art on the walls and natural light streaming through windows that overlook the city of Peekskill. It’s not your standard fitness center, says owner Darby Melnik.

“It’s a holistic health and wellness center. We’re helping people embrace their bodies, spirits and emotional selves to find what truly works and completes them."

The goal of Energy Movement Center is for members to become fit on the inside and on the outside, and to do that they might need to explore different styles of exercise that best serve them. That’s why Melnik and her team offer yoga, group bike rides, Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba classes and more.

For personal training sessions, Melnik combines yoga postures with resisted flexibility and strength training, balance and stability with traditional cardiovascular and strength training.

“In fitness, one size does not fit all. It’s in the mind, and when you look good, it shows through," Melnik said.

The center is introducing its Guided Integrated Health Optimization programs. This program focuses on each individual participant and customizes his or her program at the center.

Clients meet with a Health Counselor who will help them create their own program which can include six months of individual or group health coaching combined with fitness classes, massage, martial arts and/or personal training with the goal of optimum health benefits.

The mindset behind Energy Movement Center is not just focused on physical activity, though. Melnik says it's also about creating better lifestyle choices, and an important part of that is becoming more aware of the foods you put into your body. Melnik suggests foods and recipes and encourages her clients to keep journals to track their meals.

On April 28, Energy Movement Center will host a full day workshop with Tai Chi Grandmaster Ren Guang-Yi. Open to experience levels ranging from beginner to trained martial artist, he will provide an instruction and demonstration on the art of Tai Chi.

Energy Movement Center now offers its IHARTYOGA Community Class every Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $10 but no one is turned away due to lack of funds. Half the proceeds go to Yorktown Love in Action.
