PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — As American Legion Post 274 sponsors its second annual 5K Run/Walk for Heroes race, two Peekskill city council members are going beyond the usual registration fee to help raise funds.

The proceeds of the 3.1-mile race June 9 will go toward American Legion programs that help current military personnel stationed overseas as well as returning veterans.

Common Council members Darren Rigger and Kathy Talbot, who were both elected to the council last November, will be running. They said they are looking for sponsorships from area businesses to help raise money.

"I'd like to raise $500 for this," said Rigger, who is running with his wife, Katria. "We're willing to wear their shirt or their bumper sticker. By the time we're done, I want us to look like NASCAR drivers."

Rigger said different sponsorship amounts are available.

"For $100 I'll wear a business's shirt," he said. "For $50 I'll wear their hat. For $25 you can put a sticker on me."

Talbot said she was going along with Rigger's fundraising idea because it was for a good cause.

"I'll wear stickers, buttons, feathered boas, whatever," Talbot said.

Local businesses and other organizations can contact Rigger for sponsorship at 845-598-3971.

Race participants will meet at the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 21 at 1024 McKinley Street at 9 a.m. June 9 to check in. The race will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

The race will conclude at the Peekskill American Legion, 936 McKinley St. A barbecue will take place there to thank those who volunteered, participated and donated to the cause. Each participant will receive a T-shirt as well. To register for the race, click here.
