Dozens of kids in Peekskill have joined the monthly club since it began last year and the club has steadily grown in attendance, Peekskill Library officials said.
On July 23, as part of the library's "Teen Summer Reading Challenge," the club hosted Peekskill manga artist Jasmine Johnson to teach a workshop on the art style. The workshop was made possible by a grant from the H.O.P.E. For Youth Foundation, supporting Hudson Valley youth programs that foster healthy growth and positive achievement.
Young Adult librarian Liz Anastasi said the response to the club has been overwhelmingly positive.
"We noticed the books and TV shows becoming really popular and anime and manga has just been super huge for the kids at the library so we started the club to keep them interested and it's just been amazing," Anastasi said. "It's great to see them getting interested in art from other cultures and want to read more about it and the club is the perfect way for them to keep that interest alive."
Anastasi said the youngsters also have contributed their own artwork to the library through the program and she plans to host a display this fall.
"They are really showing a huge interest and they're constantly contributing and sharing this with their friends and it is really growing," she said. "I haven't seen a program like this anywhere else in Westchester but we love that they're embracing it and keeping it going."
