Mahoney, president of Mahoney Asset Management, published his eighth book, "Life On Your Terms: A GPS to Your Retirement. Mahoney has won multiple Tony Awards for producing "Pippin" and "Porgy and Bess," and multiple Emmys for producing the TV show "Due Process." He is also frequently seen on CNBC and Fox Business.

Mahoney said his book is about making it easier for people to understand how to plan for their retirement.

"Most people don't like financial planning, they think it's boring and they don't get to it," Mahoney said. "But people understand how a GPS works. For retirement, put in the amount of money you need and you'll find different routes to get to it."

A 1983 graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School, Mahoney said it's important to be able to simplify retirement and not get caught in the weeds of the numbers.

"So many people don't have a plan," Mahoney said. "It's like building a house with a plan."

People should have a big picture strategy and not just make impulsive investments because they got an idea from a relative or saw something on CNBC.

In discussing investment strategies, Mahoney found he had a skill in relaying his knowledge to the public.

"I always felt comfortable in public speaking," Mahoney said. "I like sharing this information so individuals can better understand their finances and take action."

When he's not doling out investment advice, Mahoney is the former Chairman of the Board at Make-A-Wish Foundation, and currently, serves as chairman of the alumni board. He joined after feeling the call to serve after Sept. 11.

"This is a very special organization," Mahoney said. "To watch kids go on these wishes, it's hard to put into words. These kids have gone through so much and they just want to go to Disney World and be away from the hospital. It can be a big turning point for a child to have that wish and excitement."
