Meier, Peekskill Builder, Dies at 88

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - Adolf "Red" Meier, a Peekskill native, died Feb. 25 at the age of 88.

As owner and operator of Redmere Builders, Inc., Meier built homes throughout Westchester. 

He was born April 2, 1923 in Peekskill to Adolf W. and Margaret M. Meier. A corporal, he served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 and was among the first to land on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945. Meier married June Adelaide Gilbert on May 11, 1947. She predeceased him on Jan. 5, 2000.

Most recently of Taghkanic, N.Y., Meier was a master woodworker and an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also liked to read and travel with his late wife.

He is survived by his daughters Martha Meier, with whom he resided in Taghkanic, and Marjorie (Terry) Splain of Holly Springs, N.C., his brothers Stephen Meier, William Meier and Charles Meier, his sisters Katherine LeFevre, Elizabeth Franklin and Madeline Meier and three grandchildren.

A private service will be planned. Memorial donations may be made to the Community Hospice of Columbia Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, NY 12414. Funeral arrangements are under Peck and Peck Funeral Home.
