PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Peekskill area residents kick off their Valentine's Day by drawing attention to a very serious issue.
On Thursday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. at The Field Library’s Hayes Plaza, the community will join with women and men around the world for “One Billion Rising,” the global movement to end violence against women and girls. The event is led by EMBARK Peekskill.
Peekskill will have its own “One Billion Rising” dance flash mob perform to the campaign song “Break the Chain,” which was created for this event. Participants can learn the dance on their own by visiting Youtube.com, search “ Break the Chain ” or you can learn it in a group setting on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 pm at Energy Movement Center at 925 South St.
One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the organization's statistic that reportedly shows one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. To learn more, visit www.onebillionrising.org .
In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at the Youth Bureau located at 828 Main St. To learn more, call (347) 453-3182 or (917) 692-2372, or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
